Large & Oversized Canvas Stretching

Custom canvas stretching of oversize works of art is one of our specialties.

Large and oversized paintings on canvas can be difficult and costly to transport, especially from abroad. We have a large workspace that can accomodate very large work projects. The example on this page is of a canvas over 157" long, one of three large paintings we stretched for this job. The paintings required special aluminum lined "BEST" stretcher bars with extra depth for a 2.25" deep gallery wrap, and adjustable corner "keys" and cross brace mounts. The back is cross braced with multiple 1x3 supports.

The aluminum channels have adjustable "keys" in each corner as well as adjustable brace attachments. This ensures that once the canvas is stretched, even if it slackens over time, it can be easily adjusted to, once again, be tight as a drum.

Initially the strethcers are laid out on our tables and assembled. Next the canvas is rolled out onto the stretcher. We have to align it carefully and tack it in the center points of all four sides. Once attached this way, we can move the canvas to the floor where it is easier to begin the arduous task of stretching and stapling. We work out from the center points of each side toward the corners, checking frequently to ensure that the corners will line up properly.

We have to work out from the center points of each side in a methodical fashion, a bit at a time. So, the canvas has to be turned top side up / bottom side up repeatedly.

Once all the sides have been stapled outward from their center points, it is time to finish by carefully stretching and stapling the corners. This ensures there will be no "ripples" in the canvas along the edges.
