This project showcases a single frame of a 35mm film print from the 1982 animated motion picture, The Last Unicorn. The piece also includes a dedication from the author of the screenplay and original novel, Peter S. Beagle. The center features a poster with characters from the film. Scoll down to see and learn more.
The single film frame needed to be illuminated from behind for the characters on it to be visible. An LED panel was placed behind the mat opening within which the film is floated between two sheets of Mylar. The light has an external battery pack with a convenient on/off switch mounted to the back of the frame.
This project posed several structural challenges. This was our first experience back-lighting artwork and framing a single 35mm film frame. We were excited to tackle this project and add these skills to our knowledge base. We look forward to applying them to other projects in the future. See detail of film frame below.
