University of California, Berkeley, School of Law

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law offers a world-class education, low tuition, and a beautiful campus located within the University of California, Berkeley campus. The School of Law's faculty includes recipients of 15 Fulbright and 20 Guggenheim fellowships, as well as authors of leading casebooks used worldwide. The University is considered a top ten law school, Berkeley Law is particularly strong in the fields of intellectual property, environmental, and international law.

Working as a framer for Berkeley Law is both an honor and a delightful experience because the faculty and staff have been involved in and supportive of each project. We picture here a few of the varying projects we have completed for this prestigious institution.

When the law library needed framing for a photo exhibit portraying students, faculty and staff in engaging and spontaneous activities, they asked us for design advice. We surveyed a long hallway connecting two sections of the school on the ground floor, along with a wood paneled classroom lobby. Noticing that much of the trim in the hallway was brushed aluminum, the project coordinator chose a one-inch satin aluminum frame and classic white acid-free matting to create a unifying effect within the hallway, along with ultraviolet protecting acrylic to protect the photos from fluorescent lighting. Our installer, who is an expert at grouping large quantities of work, consulted with the law school faculty on final placement. The result is stunning. A once dark hallway, is now alive with the faces of The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. All of the photographs were taken by James Block.

The University of California, Berkeley, Law School Archives collects and preserves historical information about life at Berkeley Law. We recently framed a series of six photographs for the upper lobby near the law library. We had previously framed photos for the library in a traditional style with double matting and text windows holding brass title plaques. These new images, photographic reprints of various class portraits, were to be printed in black and white. We decided to keep the classic style of frame to tie the display to the library exhibits, while working the more neutral tones in the photographs. We chose a warm silver leaf Federalist profile frame, with warm white and Cal blue matting. Ultraviolet Protecting acrylic and security installations protect the photographs. When we returned to photograph the finished installation we were delayed because several groups of passers-by stopped to view each photo. The photos are eye-catching and the installation is drawing viewers in for a look at the history of the law school.
